New Mexico's Strongest Man

page for a writeup.
The New
Mexico crew was well represented. Hank Segura put on a good show and
several personal records and field records were set. Shawn Littleton
(Rio Rancho) Alexis Spanovich (Albuquerque) and Chandos Robertson
(Albuquerque) made this their first show and did very well.
The
first event was the tire flip. The thin 550lb tire was to be flipped
80ft by lightweights, 100ft by middleweights, and 120ft by
heavyweights. As any heavyweight will tell you, that is some serious
cardio. All of us finished the course and Clay managed to tear
up his shoulders on the tire in the process.
Next up
was the vehicle pull. Women, LW and MW men pulled a small FedEx
Ground truck and the heavyweights mustered their collective egos together
and decided to forego the small truck for the 38,000lb fire truck that was
on site. This proved to be a bad move as the winning distance for
the heavies was one foot, nine inches. Yes, 1'9".
Farmers
walk was next and this is where some big numbers happened. Shawn has been
a framer/carpenter for the last 6 years and has developed quite a good
grip. At a bodyweight of about 230lbs, Shawn took the 200lb
implements 329' for a new field record. Clay's grip gave out at
289'. Warren made it 152' while Chan went 150'. Alex carried
75lb dumbbells for 170', beating out her competition in the women's class.
The 386lb
super stone carry was a test of mental and physical strength. Once
again, Shawn dug down deeper than ever to produce a field record carry of
376'11". Most of the marks were over 300' with many people
dropping the stone at the 300' mark. Clay hit a mud puddle on the
field while carrying the stone but made it 340' before finally giving in.
Atlas
stones to 48" were the last event. LW and MW loaded stones 160
to 280 and the heavies loaded 160-320. Alex loaded one stone (first
time attempting stones) Chan and Warren finished 3 stones, Shawn finished
4, and Clay finished all four fast enough to win the event.
